How to Care for a Leather Handbag — A Complete Guide

A well-made leather bag asks very little of you. But what it does ask, it asks consistently. Here is everything you need to know — and almost nothing you do not.

The most common mistake in leather care is overdoing it. Full-grain leather is remarkably self-sufficient. It needs protection, not intervention. This guide is built around one principle: do less, do it well, do it regularly.

The four pillars of leather care

01 — Condition every 3 months
Apply a small amount of uncoloured leather balm with a soft cloth, using circular motions. Leave for ten minutes, then buff gently. This replenishes the natural oils in the hide and prevents drying or cracking. No product should be applied more than once per season — over-conditioning softens the structure of the bag over time.

02 — Clean gently and rarely
For surface dust, a dry microfibre cloth is sufficient. For marks, a barely damp cloth worked lightly in one direction. Never use soap, alcohol, or commercial cleaning sprays on full-grain leather — they strip the natural oils and damage the surface permanently.

03 — Store with intention
When not in use, stuff your bag lightly with tissue paper to maintain its shape. Store it in its dust bag, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Never store in plastic — leather needs to breathe.

04 — Protect before the weather arrives
A light application of leather protector spray at the beginning of autumn and spring creates a barrier against rain and humidity without sealing the leather's pores. Apply from 30cm, allow to dry fully, do not over-apply.

What to do if your bag gets wet

Do not use a hairdryer. Do not place it near a radiator. Shake off excess water, reshape the bag by hand, stuff it loosely with tissue paper, and leave it to dry naturally at room temperature for at least 24 hours. Once fully dry, apply a thin layer of conditioning balm.

"The enemy of leather is not water. It is heat and haste — the two things people reach for when they want to fix something quickly."

Hardware care

The brass hardware on a Menière Paris bag is solid and gold-plated. For general cleaning, a dry soft cloth is sufficient. Avoid metal polishes, which can remove the plating. If the hardware becomes tarnished, a cotton bud lightly dampened with warm water will restore the surface.

Do / Do not — quick reference

Do : condition with leather balm every 3 months · store in a dust bag · dry naturally at room temperature · stuff with tissue paper when storing · apply protective spray seasonally.

Do not : use a hairdryer or direct heat · apply soap, alcohol, or wipes · store in plastic · over-condition · hang by strap for long periods · ignore a stain.

When to see a professional

A quality leather bag repaired professionally is almost always worth the cost. Deep scratches, colour loss, broken stitching — a skilled leather restorer can address these, often invisibly. The cost is a fraction of a replacement.
